At Knowsley Community College we are passionate about increasing opportunity for all. Our Inclusive Learning department is a friendly and nurturing environment, which supports young people with a wide range of learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Our courses offer the chance to increase independent living skills, build employability and work on personal development by providing a flexible learning environment, taking in to account each students individual needs. After completing a Inclusive Learning course at Knowsley Community College, our students leave better prepared for independent living and equipped with an abundance of tools and confidence. Our healthcare team, provide support with students personal needs, and our learning support officers, assist students with their studies. Students join a friendly support network and make new friends along the way.

Work Skills Pathway 

The Work Skills programme is designed to support students with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) to enable them to progress into employment or progress to a higher level course.

Tutors will work with the students to help develop their transferable skills such as problem solving, communication and teamwork. Alongside this they will complete further learning and employment qualifications including English and maths.

During their time on the course students will also have the opportunity to attend ‘vocational tasters’ within other areas of the College to prepare them for future study and work experience opportunities.

Each student will have a personal tutor with specialist SEND knowledge who is responsible for all aspects of their study programme and will support them to make progress towards outcomes through an individualised approach.

The pathway intentions are for students to:

  • Develop communication skills
  • Develop practical English and maths skills
  • Work towards individualised goals
  • Develop core independent living skills
  • Develop healthy lifestyles choices
  • Become better equipped to make informed choices about their lives

The pathway includes:

  • OCR SFLE units to support vocational opportunities at E3 or L1
  • RARPA framework to support EHCP outcomes and personal development
  • English and maths qualifications
  • Internal or external work experience opportunities
  • Tutorial sessions
  • PHSE

Life Skills Pathway 

The Life Skills pathway is designed for students with a range of Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) to develop their independence and successfully transition into adulthood.

The programme aims to provide a differentiated and individualised approach to each student’s study programme at College in order to work towards outcomes and meet their aspirations for future life. All pathways will include 4 week initial induction and assessment.

  • Develop communication skills
  • Develop practical English and maths skills
  • Work towards individualised goals
  • Develop core independent living skills
  • Develop healthy lifestyles choices
  • Become better equipped to make informed choices about their lives

The pathway includes:

  • OCR SFLE units to support independent living and life skills at E1 to E3
  • RARPA framework to support EHCP outcomes and personal development
  • English and maths embedded throughout the curriculum offer to support life skills
  • Buy it, Cook it, Eat it! Weekly opportunity to develop independent living skills through cookery
  • Tutorial sessions
  • PHSE
