Childwall Abbey School is a Local Authority specialist secondary school for pupils with Complex Learning Difficulties, aged 11-19. We are located in a beautiful part of the south of Liverpool and have thriving links with our local community. We provide quality education, for pupils who have a wide variety of complex learning difficulties, usually including Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
At Childwall Abbey, we know that all our pupils can achieve, if they are able to experience a curriculum, learning environment and support, which meet their individual needs.Our Mission Statement underpins all our practice in the daily life of our school. We are:

Childwall Abbey School is a Local Authority specialist secondary school for pupils with Complex Learning Difficulties, in particular ASD, aged 11-19. We are located in a beautiful part of the south of Liverpool, surrounded by trees and adjacent to Score Lane Park and the beautiful Childwall Woods. We have a bespoke, ASD friendly environment which encourages our pupils to feel secure, develop their interests and to aspire to achieve as actively contributing citizens.
At Childwall Abbey, we know that all our pupils can achieve, if they are able to experience a curriculum, learning environment and support, which meet their individual needs. Our Mission Statement underpins all our practice in the daily life of our school. We are: “A calm, safe and welcoming place in which to work and learn. A place where everyone supports each other to achieve. A place we enjoy coming to each day.” We have an active and engaged School Council which ensures that "pupil voice" is heard.
We have thriving and active links with our local community, including primary and secondary schools, local churches, colleges, workplaces, Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool John Moores University and NHS Liverpool. Our pupils enjoy many opportunities to get out and about on educational visits which enrich their learning and develop their appreciation of the rich cultural heritage of our city. These visits include trips to sites of historical and religious interest, sporting venues, transport hubs, theatres, museums and galleries.
At Childwall Abbey, we understand the importance of working closely with parents, carers, governors and many other agencies, to develop independence and self-esteem in all our pupils. We value all opportunities to work collaboratively to support and encourage our pupils. Parents and carers are invited to maintain close contact with the school and are invited to regular parents evenings, pupil performances, coffee mornings and sports days as well as their child's Annual Review.
Pupils are encouraged and supported to develop skills for adult life throughout their time at Childwall Abbey School. All pupils achieve nationally accredited certification across the curriculum. All pupils have access to appropriate Independent Advice and Guidance with regard to transition from school to college or Sixth-form. This is embedded throughout their time at school through Learning for Life and Careers and all pupils are treated as individuals when deciding which next steps are most appropriate for them.
Childwall Abbey pupils have frequent opportunities to learn outside the classroom, including taking part in our Forest Schools programme, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, RHS Gardening for Schools Scheme, NHS Cadets, workplace and college visits and in-house travel training. Respect for the environment and engagement with charitable fundraising activities also enrich the life of the school and encourage our pupils to become respectful, active and positive contributors to the wider community.
Mental and physical wellbeing are a priority at Childwall Abbey School. All pupils are encouraged to take part in the Daily Mile. We have outstanding facilities for sports and exercise, including a fully equipped MUGA, a wide array of outdoor exercise equipment, three discrete play areas for the key stages and a Sport England standard Gym and sports field. Pupils are encouraged to keep fit in ways they find enjoyable and engaging, in order to embed a lifelong understanding of the mental and physical benefits of exercise.
