Description

1. How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs? 

Before a child starts in the nursery the nursery manager or a member of the staff team will meet with the parent/carer to fill in the registration documents. During this time parents/carers can discuss any concerns they have regarding their child’s development and let staff know what your child can or cannot do already. Children are regularly observed and staff track children’s progress to ensure they are meeting their appropriate developmental milestones. Parents meeting are held twice per year and staff build on working in partnership with parents/carers to best support their child whilst attending nursery. We have three staff members that have completed the Early Years S.E.N.C.O Award and staff attend regular training that we feel will benefit the nursery children and setting. As we are based in the Children Centre we have support from the S.E.N and Disability Link Workers and we also work closely with other agencies. Two year progress checks are completed in partnership with the child’s parent’s and Health Visitor (if possible) and staff attend E.H.AT and T.A.F meetings if these are in place to support the child and family.

2. How will the staff in the setting support my child?

• Working with parents/carers to find out the child’s starting points on entry to the nursery.
• Observing and tracking children’s progress linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
• Working with parents and making Referral’s to specialist services if needed.
• Children’s progress will be continually monitored and regularly shared with parents through review meetings.  Staff will monitor children’s progress through observation, learning journal, parental input, small group work, key person system, WELCOMM sreening, EYFS, Early Learning Goals and well-being and involvement scales. 
• Staff will observe children’s interests and development levels and use these to create next steps for their learning to help children reach their individual learning targets. 
• Key person will ensure a smooth transition from nursery to reception.

 3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child's needs? 

• Children’s needs will be determined in partnership with parents and other agencies for example health visitors and Speech and Language Therapy.  We will use observation to discover the children’s needs and tailor activities to suit a child’s age, level of development and individual interests. 
• We will use the EYFS as a benchmark for children’s development throughout their time spent in nursery. 
•  If your child has a play plan in place then the targets will be discussed and progress monitored and reviewed with parents/carers. 

4. What specialist services and expertise can be accessed by the setting?

The setting has a designated Special Educational needs and disabilities co-ordinator who can discuss any concerns with parents and families and can guide them through the process of obtaining additional support if needed. 

The setting works closely with the local authority and accesses support from Social Care, Health Visiting teams and our local children’s centre.  We are also able to access support from speech and language therapist, education psychologist, SENISS (Special Educational Needs Inclusion Support Service) and paediatricians. 

Staff are happy to support parents and families with any specialist service and can accompany to appointments etc. if required.  Staff are able to provide reports on children’s learning and development where necessary. 

We are members of the Early Years Consortia. 

Staff have attended training in Makaton, ASD, Portage, behaviour managment and First Aid

5. How accessible is the setting?

 The setting is wheelchair accessible, being all on one level.

We have disabled facilities for both adults and children.

We are happy to discuss your child individual needs and to make reasonable adjustments.

 6. How will the setting support my child in transferring to the next stage of education?

 We are Governed by Leamington Primary School and we have close links with schools in the Norris Green Area and also if a child is attending school out of the Liverpool area we will try our best to support the transition. We attend local cluster meetings with schools and nurseries every half term so we  can build on these strong links.

When we are informed of a new provision a child will be attending we will work closely with parents and carers as well as the new provision to ensure all needs are catered for.  Written records of children’s learning and development will be shared with the new setting.  

Staff from the new provision will be invited into our nursery to meet the child here and observe them in our environment.  They will also have the opportunity to have a discussion with the child’s keyperson.  Staff will accompany children and parents to visits to the new setting in order to support the child in settling when necessary. If parents require support to find a local school or different provision then staff are happy to support them to do this through looking at reports and attending visits with them

7. How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?

 Parents can be involved in the setting in a variety of ways.  Upon beginning their time at the nursery parents are asked to provide an idea of where children are up to with their learning and development.  Parents are welcomed into the setting during induction periods and can visit with their children until they are happy to leave them in our care.  Parents are welcome to come into nursery and share any skills they have with the children for example if a parent enjoys art and craft or play musical instruments, they may like to come into nursery and do some painting or singing with the children.  We hold parents stay and play session’s termly and coffee mornings. Parents are also invited into the setting regularly for reviews of their child’s learning and at the end of the summer term we have an annual outing.

We encourage home learning with children and parents are able to take a range of resources home with them such as activity bags and story sacks.  These are all things that parents can do at home with their children and they have opportunities to feedback to staff what they have done so staff can use this when planning for children’s learning. 

We value parent’s feedback and thoughts and have opportunities for parents to provide feedback through questionnaires and staff build on partnership working with parents.
