- How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?
At Playtots our aim is to enable every individual child to meet their full potential. When you and your child join our setting we gather lots of information about your child and talk to you about what your child enjoys and what they can do already. An initial assessment is completed with Parents/carers before the child starts at the setting, this helps to support the child during their transition into nursery. We work closely with you at all times to track their progress and to ensure that they are reaching their appropriate developmental milestones.
If you are concerned or if the children are not reaching their milestones we will work with the family to find alternative ways to support them. We have a trained special needs coordinator who has experience of working with children with additional needs.
2.How will staff in the setting support my child?
All children are treated as unique individuals and are planned for accordingly to offer the best activities to further develop their learning throughout EYFS. The progress of all children is monitored and reviewed regularly and shared with parents. We measure progress using:
- EYFS, Learning Journals, Observations, sensory play, visuals/symbols, small group work, key worker system
- Play plans and regular meetings with SENCO, key person, parents/carers will take place.
- Referral to specialist services if needed.
- Offering an established key person system to ensure that links between the setting and home are maintained.
3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs?
The setting is organised into 4 separate rooms which support the ages and stages of development. All children work at their own pace, and while doing so staff will ensure that all milestones are being catered for to enhance all individual child’s learning and progress. The child’s key person plans activities, which are based on the children’s individual stage of development, what they enjoy and what parents have observed at home.
4. What specialist services and expertise can be accessed by the setting?
All our staff are highly trained and experienced. We attend regular training to improve and develop our practice. We access professional support from Educational Psychologists, SENISS, Consortia, and any training needs for our practitioners to support children in our setting that require additional support. We work closely with the speech and language team and the health visiting team and have built professional relationships and links with other agencies throughout the local authority.
We are members of the national day nursery association.
Staff have a range of qualifications across the setting including first aid, and have accessed training in Autism Awareness, behaviour management, Sensory Processing, Makaton, Speech and Language, Epilepsy Awareness, Portage and many other areas. When needed we also work with community nurses to support children who require specialist interventions such as peg/tube feeding, mobility aids or medical interventions.
5. How accessible is the setting?
The setting is wheel chair accessible at ground level. We are happy to discuss your child’s individual needs and to make reasonable adjustments where necessary.
6. How will the setting support my child in transferring to the next stage of education?
We work closely with all schools when children transition to school. We organise sessions for teachers to visit the nursery and we take small groups of children on visits to their new schools. We also have attended transition meetings with parents.
We plan activities for the children in preparation for their move to school such as packed lunch day, uniform day. We also slowly introduce stories and games related to school experience.
Each child also has a transition report which is sent to their teacher at their new school to ensure continuity in their early learning.
7.How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?
We invite parents to discuss their child's progress regularly, and hold termly review meetings. We encourage parents to share any information about activities or new skills they learn at home and include this in our individual planning for the child.
We use ipad and email technology as well as social media to keep parents informed and up to date with news and events.
We hold family events such as stay and play sessions and we link with our local children centre and parent groups.
