Hope School

Hope School is a special state school for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMH). Pupils range from aged 5 - 13 years and we accept both boys and girls. We are an attachment and trauma informed school, believing that following an attachment friendly practice allows pupils to become intrinsically motivated to want to learn and do well. We offer a creative based curriculum which meets the holistic needs of individual students. We know that our pupils work best when they are challenged in their learning and the curriculum is based around this.

Other notes

Hope School is a special school for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMH). Pupils range from aged 5-13. Hope School is unique because of our non-exclusion policy and the fact that we will never exclude a child from school.

Traditionally focusing on behaviour management, Hope School has moved away from this and now focuses on attachment informed practice. Attachment friendly practice allows pupils to become intrinsically motivated to want to learn and do well.

The school day begins at 8:30am and classes begin with a short ‘check in’ session and Phonics. This is followed by 5 lessons which are all linked to an age- related curriculum.  All staff at Hope school provide pupils with an outstanding education. Staff are trained to work with pupils who have a range of needs e.g. attachment, ASD, ADHD, Learning Difficulties, sensory needs and Speech and Language. Hope school has two sensory rooms and a sensory circuit on site for pupils to use throughout the day. Hope pupils also receive support from outside agencies such as OT, SALT, Play Therapy, Life Story Work and CBT. Hope school ensures that each pupil is treated individually but in an inclusive environment which is child-centred.

We work closely with parents and carers of children in the school who are each given the opportunity to access training on attachment and trauma. We strive to work closely with parents and carers in developing rewarding attachment relationships with the children in their care.

We at Hope School rely on the continued support from the parents and carers of our pupils as we encourage our pupils to live up to our motto of ‘If I Try I Can’.

Local Offer

Hope school caters for pupils aged 5-13 (Year 1 to Year 8) who have an EHCP, we provide a creative curriculum which supports pupils individual needs. Pupils all have One Page Profiles which help them reach targets and goals related to their learning and additional needs. These targets and goals are achieved by 1:1 intervention sessions by staff or specialists such as Occupational Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Speech and Language. All lessons are scaffolded to meet individual needs so although pupils are challenged in their learning they also have the support they need to achieve and make progress. Class sizes are never bigger than 12 and all classes have two members of staff (one teacher, 1 support.) Pupils EHCP's are reviewed annually and targets are updated, this ensures that pupils are receiving the correct support and allows teachers, parents and pupils the time to discuss pupils progress and next steps.
